Great Adventure Travel Destinations For 2011

With another holiday season behind us at last, it is time to start looking to the year ahead and firming up our travel plans. If you haven't already made your preparations for 2011, and you're looking for something a bit more adventurous this year, then perhaps we can suggest a few destinations that might meet your needs.

Last year, when we shared our list of top adventure travel destinations it was populated with a few countries that are commonly recognized as offering outstanding experiences for the adventure traveler. Places such as Nepal, Tibet, and Peru, which are widely considered to be classics of this type of travel. For this year's list, those places have been sent to the Adventure Travel Hall of Fame, making room for some up and coming destinations to get some much needed recognition.

So, without further ado, here are my picks for the top adventure travel destinations for 2011.

The United States
This may seem like an odd pick to begin the list with, but hear me out before dismissing it. The U.S. is one big, diverse place, with plenty to offer any traveler, let alone those looking for adventure. No matter what your outdoor pursuit or adrenaline inducing addiction, you'll find an excellent place to pursue it here in the States. Enjoy mountain climbing? Then head to Colorado where you'll find 53 peaks in excess of 14,000 feet in that state alone. Is mountain biking your thing? Then make the journey to Moab, Utah, home to some of the best trails in the world. Into kayaking? Great! What's your flavor? Whitewater? Flat water? Sea kayaking? It doesn't matter, you can do it all right here in the U.S., where there are plenty of forests, deserts, mountains, and rivers to roam. If you're coming from abroad, you may be surprised, and a little overwhelmed, with all the options. And if you're from the U.S., perhaps you'll be reminded of the magic of domestic travel too.

India
Another large and geographically diverse country, India can lure adventure travelers with a host of options. Want to spend some time on the beach or go diving and snorkeling? Then head to Goa for plenty of aquatic fun. Prefer a mountain trek? Then make your way to the remote northern region to gain access to the High Himalaya, along with its quaint mountain villages and Buddhist culture. For a different kind of hike head to the famed Valley of Flowers to experience more than 300 species of the colorful plants in one location. And for a truly unique adventure, explore the massive Thar Desert on the back of a camel.

Ethiopia
Africa has always held a certain allure for the adventure traveler, with many headed to Kenya, Tanzania, or South Africa for the classic safari experience. But there are plenty of other fantastic destinations on the continent that are worth exploring as well, most of which have a lot less tourism traffic. Take Ethiopia for example. The country is rich in history and culture and offers plenty of options for the active traveler as well. I recommend trekking the Simien Mountains, where you'll encounter packs of rock climbing baboons en route to the medieval fortress of Gondar or make the journey to Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile. Stop by the holy city of Lalibela as well, where you'll be treated to the amazing site of a series of churches carved from the rock. [Photo credit: Justin Clements via WikiMedia]

Argentina
For travelers looking to go to extremes, it is tough to beat Argentina. The country offers visitors plenty to see and do while exploring a diverse number of unique landscapes. For instance, visitors can go to the Iguazu Falls region to take in the tropical rain forests and then travel south to Tierra del Fuego for a taste of the Antarctic. Backpackers and climbers will find plenty to love in the incomparable Patagonia district and paddlers will be thrilled with the whitewater options as well. The truly adventurous can test their mettle on the 22,841-foot tall Aconcaqua, the highest peak in the world outside of the Himalaya.

Croatia
Over the past decade, Eastern Europe has gone from a very well kept secret to a popular destination for those seeking unique cultures, lavish history, and fantastic art. But the region has plenty to offer the adventure traveler as well, with Croatia leading the pack as the best destination for adrenaline junkies. Travelers who enjoy being on the water will love sea kayaking and sailing on the Adriatic Sea, while those who prefer to be under it, will love to dive the various ship wrecks that are just off the coast. Moving further inland, paddlers will find crystal clear rivers to run, replete with plenty of whitewater while trekkers and backpackers will enjoy the mountain trails that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Head to Ucka Mountain for a hike through dense forests that eventually give way to a spectacular view of Kvarner Bay.

New Zealand
New Zealand earned a spot on our list last year, but it is such a great adventure destination that it deserves another nod for 2011 as well. For many travelers, New Zealand is the adventure capital of the world thanks to its amazingly diverse terrain, which gives rise to some of the best mountain biking, paddling, and climbing options found anywhere. It is also home to what is quite possibly the greatest hike in the world in the form of the Milford Track, a 33 mile trail that runs through the heart of Fiordland National Park while surrounded by some of the best scenery on the planet. The winter months bring great skiing and snowboarding options as well, with Mount Ruapehu, an active volcano cone on the North Island, being amongst the most popular destinations. Guyana
Often overlooked in favor of more well known South American destinations, Guyana is a great choice for adventure travelers looking to escape the crowds and get off the beaten path. Highlights include jungle canopy tours of the Iwokrama Rainforest Reserve and a visit to the 741-foot tall Kaieteur Falls, which is billed as the tallest sheer drop waterfall in the world. But no trip to Guyana is complete without a trek through the Rupununi region in the southern part of the country. This remote and isolated wetlands area is home to a dizzying array of wildlife including giant river otters, black caiman, anteaters, jaguars, tapirs, anacondas and more. Birdwatchers will find the place especially alluring with hundreds of unique species on display.

There you have it. Ten great destinations that will fill your travel itinerary with plenty of adventure in the year ahead. Enjoy!

BANGKOK

Bangkok is the capital city of Thailand and nearly all travelers going to Thailand will pass through this popular Thai travel destination. PATTAYA

The beach at Pattaya is actually not very impressive when compared to the beaches found on Phuket or Samui however the beach is not the primary reason why Pattaya is one of the most popular travel destinations in Thailand. The biggest attraction for many visitors is in fact the lively nightlife which can be found in Pattaya. There are thousands of beer bars and other type of Pattaya nightlife venues where tourists can mingle with the lovely Thai girls that work in these establishments. Airport Information for Hawaii

There are six Hawaii different islands available for tourists to select. The people who decide to go to Hawaii for the first time usually plan to visit one or more than one island but have numerous questions relating to where exactly to go and how exactly to get there. In fact, this article serves as an introductory guide on one of the most famous worldwide vacation locations if you are interested in reaching the Hawaii area and checking out some of its islands. Thus, you should know that mainly airline companies connect the islands together by offering the needed inter-island flights. Hawaiian Airlines, Aloha Airlines, or Island Air are some of the companies that serve customers on a daily basis and finding the best price deals can usually be done through the companies' websites or through your mainland flight company or travel agent.

If you are considering visiting Hawaii during your vacations period, most probably you will fly into the Honolulu International Airport (HNL). Most mainland and International flights use this airport for their flights and travelers heading on to another island may have to deplane and get on an inter-island flight to reach their final destination. The HNL airport is located on the outskirts of Honolulu, about a 20-minute drive to Waikiki, and about a 45-minute drive to the North Shore. In addition, Maui has three airports. The major airport is Kahalui Airport (OGG), which allows direct flights from the West coast of the U.S. mainland. The drive from the airport to Kihei or Wailea is less than half an hour, but if you plan to visit Lahaina or Kaanapali then be prepared for another hour of traveling. Much closer to the Lahaina area is Kapalua Airport (JHM), but since it serves only local flights, you can reach this destination specifically from Honolulu. Another airport is located in Hana (HNM) in case driving is not your favorite sport, but you will be taking a very small plane. Pacific Wings offer this specific flight. Local agents can also assist you in finding day ferries from Maui to Lanai and Molokai.

Hawaii, which actually is called the Big Island to avoid any confusion, has two airports; Hilo International Airport (ITO) and Keahole Airport (KOA). Located an a 2.5 hour drive away from each other these two airports can lead you to some of the finest destination points of your Hawaii visit. While Hilo is closest to Honokaa, Kapoho, and Volcano, Keahole is in Kailua-Kona, which is closest to all of Kona, Puako, Kohala, Waikoloa, and Waimea. Direct flights exist from the mainland only to Keahole and no ferries from the Big Island (Hawaii) are available to any other island. Although sad, it is true. Furthermore, Lihue Airport (LIH) is the sole airport of Kauai, in Lihue, and some carriers offer direct flights from the mainland. Specifically, Lihue is about halfway to everything on the island-but a bit closer to Poipu than Princeville. Keep in mind that there are no ferries from Kauai to any other island. In addition, Molokai has one airport, Molokai Airport (MKK) which is located in central Molokai. As a visitor you will probably have to take a small airplane in, usually no bigger than 20-seats. You will be able to fly there from Honolulu or Kahului via Island and small commercial boats can transfer you from Maui to Molokai. Moreover, Lanai has one airport, Lanai Airport (LNY), near Lanai City, but it also accepts only small airplanes. Again, Island Air can fly you in from Honolulu and small commercial boats are available for you to take from Maui to Molokai.

Finally, travel agents state that by 2007 Hawaii Super Ferry should be operating between all the islands and will hopefully revolutionize the current expensive and inefficient inter-island travel systems. But until then, you should better book your flight in advance and keep a copy of this article in hand.

Top Travel Packing Tips – Bring What You Need but Travel Light

Use a great travel packing list as a key to a low-stress and happy vacation or business travel trip.

With the web there's no excuse to not use a great travel packing checklist to speed your travel packing and ensure enjoyment. Packing correctly – bringing just what you need, but not one iota extra – can lighten your physical and mental load. By carrying less you'll move around easier, yet the trick, of course, is being sure you haven't forgotten anything essential.

Tip #1: Leave home and office in good order. Make sure your home is all buttoned up before you leave and that pets and plants will be taken care off. Leave keys with a neighbor so they can access in case of emergency, empty your refrigerator and stop routine deliveries. In the office, nothing supports a successful trip than a clean desk and empty email in box – schedule a few hours of blocked out time the day before your trip to catch up on all urgent office matters.

Tip #2: Make packing easy by using a great travel packing checklist. There's no excuse for not using a travel packing list to make sure you don't forget anything essential. You can use a web search engine to search for 'travel packing list', 'travel packing tips', or 'travel packing checklist' or see the end of this article for a link to my favorite printable travel packing list. Find one you like and print it out. Use it religiously.

Tip #3: Bring the bare minimum. Nothing adds to stress and tiredness on travel like having too much and too heavy of a luggage burden. I always recommend that, once you're all packed, try carrying all your luggage for 5 or 10 minutes – say around a city block. This begins to simulate the short hauls you'll have on your trip. After your test haul, you'll be motivated to lighten up. Find items you can do with out.

Tip #4: Learn and improve. As you use your packing list have a system for marking it up. You might cross out any items that you didn't bring, and check marks next to the ones you did. No, here comes the critical step – bring the marked up printout with you on your trip. During your trip, if you find you need something that you didn't bring, note it down on the list. And, just as importantly, at the end of your trip take a moment and find those items you brought, but that you can live without next time – and cross them out. As your packing list gets dog eared and marked up, consider typing it into your computer so you have your own custom list (you don't have to type it in from scratch, just select and copy the original web list you started from and paste it into your word processor – you can then start editing this complete list).

That's it – travel light but without out missing any essential items. Use your travel packing list religiously and hone it constantly...

When it comes to vacation destinations that are all about having fun in the sun, nothing beats the Caribbean. But traveling to a hot destination like the Caribbean can be quite expensive, and for this reason, many people balk at the idea of a Caribbean travel. Indeed, why spend so much on a single vacation when you could visit much cheaper vacation destinations? Never mind if these places do not even come close to what a Caribbean travel entails.

What if we told you that there is a much better way to spend a vacation? What if we told you that you can go on a Caribbean travel vacation without having to spend a lot of your hard earned money?

For this reason, the island is a popular Caribbean travel destination for many visitors who want to bask in the compelling charm, romance, and excitement that the islands are known for.

Rendezvous Bay Hotel and Villas may not have all that flash and glamour, but it lacks in that department, the hotel makes up for their own location and fantastic rates starts at hundred dollars while villa costs few hundred dollars. This Caribbean travel resort hotel offers rooms, all sitting directly on fifty palm laden acres of fronting a one and half mile long sugary sand beach. The resort has been recently renovated, offering white tile floors and simple rattan furnishings, and is divided among a dozen low rise buildings.

Another worthy hotel group is Ku, its name meaning sacred place in the Arawak Indian language. With room rates starting at two hundred ninety five dollar, these twenty seven suite hotels overlooks Shoal Bay East and are South Beach Chic, with minimalist white decoration, air conditioning, and full kitchens.

Honeymoon Favorite Antigua

Located just south of another popular Caribbean travel destination of Barbuda. Antigua markets itself as a luxury Caribbean travel escape. Its many hotels and resorts located around the coastline are all favorites when it comes to honeymooning while on a Caribbean travel.

While you do not have to be on your honeymoon to enjoy Antigua island charm, the Cocobay Resort location on a hillside facing the Caribbean Sea makes for a very romantic atmosphere. The idyllic hotel is made of forty seven Creole style cottages in soft pastel hues with rates that are very affordable at two hundred forty dollar.

Hybrid Beat Bahamas

If you want a decidedly patrician vibe during your Caribbean travel vacation, then the Landing, a seven room inn on Harbor Island is exactly for you. There are no televisions, no phones, or Internet connections things that distract you from the sheer beauty of the beach a few blocks away. And for only two hundred forty dollar, you can get one of the bay view rooms, which offer the best views of the harbor and comes with crisp white linens, terraces, and four poster beds...
